Events from 2010

We had a great year for our lavender and herbs. We expanded our lavender field with hundreds of new plants including Buena Vista, Purple Bouquet, True Grosso, and Grosso Bleu. The wet June and July helped these new small plants get established.

The harvest of Catnip was amazing! After the harvesting, Amy experienced a cat attacking her feet and jumping three feet in the air.

Many other herbs were a bumper crop: Sage, Oregano, Tarragon, Lemon and Regular Thyme, and Basil. We developed new teas including our Lovely Lemon which was a big hit. We also have an excellent Peppermint. It is refreshing and energizing. These have all been dried.

The Mother’s Day Tea in May was a wonderful time with a lovely group of ladies. The weather was cool and windy so it was nice to stay indoors with a hot cup of tea. Kim provided excellent tips for planning one’s garden design.

The “Lavender and You” and “Cooking with Herbs” Tea and Lecture events provided a lot of ideas on what to do with your herbs once you have them. Basil and Lemon Thyme continue to be among the more popular herbs to smell and eat alone. Fresh herbs add the flavor and nutrients without the calories. You need to use about 5-6 times the volume of chopped fresh herbs as dried. Lavender is a wonderful gift from God and a comforting fragrance in the bleak days of winter.

Kim made wreaths all summer. Most are lavender. But she also weaved in Feverfew, Hydrangea, Sweet Woodruff and Oregano blossoms. We held three workshops, two at our farm and one for the October festival.

The butterflies were fantastic this September. They were particularly attracted to the Anise Hyssop and Catnip plants in the formal herb garden.

We enjoyed seeing some of you at the Old Thyme Herb Festival and Harvest Fair in West Union this past October 8th through 10th. This rolling hill Amish country was just lovely and the weather was perfect. The farm that hosted the festival had roaming peacocks and rabbits. Kim had a wreath making workshop and the lavender fragrance filled the place.
